What is the redemption period of a domain?

If a domain name is not renewed in time, it expires and goes into quarantine. In this state the domain is inactive, but remains reserved and can only be renewed by you. If you don't renew it, it goes into a redemption period.

If you want to renew the domain name that is in the redemption period, then you will need to pay the cost of the renewal and a sum of money in addition, to get the domain name out of the redemption period.

Below we will see an indicative example for a domain name ending in .com

When a domain name ending in .com expires and is not renewed in time, it enters a 40-day quarantine period and the renewal cost is €15.30 per year (excluding VAT). If it is not renewed within the 40 days of the quarantine, then it enters a Redemption period and its renewal cost rises to €15.30 per year (without VAT) + €95 (without VAT) to exit the domain name from the period acquisition.

Note that there are endings that enter the domain into redemption status directly, without quarantine, and others that the registry requests to renew some time before it expires.
